ABC NEWS LIVE PRIME

AMERICA’S #1 NEWS STREAMING

// ABC NEWS

Vivid Zero collaborated with ABC News Live Prime on a one-of-a-kind news graphics package that elevates the viewer experience. Drawing from our expertise with news rebrands and graphics systems, we engineered a unique visual approach that pushes the boundaries of broadcast design.

BRAND THEORY

// DIGITAL ASSEMBLY

The package’s core design philosophy employs rounded corners and tab-based interfaces, inspired by modern web browsers and digital platforms. This approach creates an immediate sense of familiarity for viewers who are increasingly consuming news through digital channels. The subtle rounded edges soften the overall aesthetic while conveying a gravitas, expected of an ABC News broadcast.

The package achieves a delicate balance between curved and angular elements, creating a dynamic visual contrast that captures the essence of ABC News Live. This interplay of shapes contributes to the overall aesthetic appeal of the design, resulting in a look that is both contemporary and authoritative.

The package features two distinct color treatments that distinguish between programming blocks while maintaining visual consistency. The Primetime color palette employs deep, rich blues that convey authority and sophistication, as seen in ABC News Live Prime with Linsey Davis. In contrast, the Dayside presentation utilizes a lighter, more approachable aesthetic that remains equally polished.

OPENS

// SLIDING STORIES INTO PLACE

The ABC News Live Prime package reimagines the iconic carousel slide projector in the digital age. This dynamic 3D sequence reinterprets the circular motion of traditional photo carousels. Instead of physical slides, the design features browser-like tabs housing numerous news stories, creating a visual metaphor for ABC New’s modern coverage. Each tab functions as a container for both imagery and text, ultimately resolving to form the ABC logo – a powerful representation of how all of the various stories from all over the world can be found at ABC News Live.

// CONTENT OPENS

The Content Open features a 2D abstraction of the tab system, designed with modularity to accommodate stories. The design incorporates imagery framed by crisp white linear elements that echo the tab shapes from the main open. This framework seamlessly aligns with the lower thirds system as the content open concludes, creating a seamless transition into the show.

// FRANCHISE OPENS

The Franchise Opens are a flexible and modular design system that can be customized. The sophisticated white linear outlines connect back to the main package’s design theory, while the isometric perspective creates a distinct visual approach that sets these opens apart.

BUMPERS

// MOVING ALONG

The Bumpers serve as essential show-closing elements, featuring a design that echoes the open’s carousel-inspired aesthetic.

TRANSITIONS

// SMOOTH OPERATORS

The Transitions utilize sophisticated layered glass panels to create dynamic movement across the screen. These semi-transparent elements slide and intersect to create depth through light refraction and subtle blur treatments.

LOWER THIRDS SYSTEM

// DIGITAL BEDROCK

The lower thirds system embodies the package’s core design philosophy, featuring an elegant yet functional approach that mirrors the carousel-inspired tabbed aesthetic. Through clean typography and a browser-like interface, the system creates a clear hierarchy for multiple levels of information, including category indicators, location markers, and story headlines with supporting subtext. The design functions like a modern web browser, with the ability to fold information on and off screen, from branding to breaking news alerts to categorical sub-tabs.

BACKGROUNDS

// CIRCULAR FRAGMENTS

The backgrounds feature abstract forms derived from the opening sequence, creating visual depth while maintaining subtlety. The design consists of rhythmic, parallel lines that curve and flow through a rich dimensional space with three distinct color variations for Primetime, Dayside and Breaking News.

FULLSCREEN SYSTEMS

// THE CANVAS

The Fullscreen system serves as a canvas for storytelling, featuring a framework that supports various content types including quotes, bullet points, phone interviews, imagery, and more. We explored two distinct design approaches: one featuring a more angular, boxed layout that echoes the content opens’ abstracted structure, while the other embraces circular, rounded elements that align with the carousel-inspired main opens and bumpers.
